ARTIST STATEMENT

My practice explores identity as layered, embodied, and constantly evolving rather than fixed. I focus on how cultural background and contemporary life exist within the same person. Working primarily with Ankara fabric, textured canvases, and acrylic paint, I create figurative works that move between abstraction and realism. Ankara fabric functions as the skin of my figures. I use it deliberately, not as decoration, but as a direct articulation of cultural identity. The fabric suggests origin and inheritance, while the clothing, posture, and styling reflect modern aesthetics and present-day confidence. By bringing these elements together, I present identity as rooted yet current, shaped by heritage but fully engaged with contemporary life. Texture and layering are central to my process. What appears on the surface is intentional, yet there is always something beneath. I am interested in that tension between visibility and depth, tradition and modernity, inheritance and self-definition. My figures are not nostalgic; they exist in the present. The fabric anchors them, but their presence is forward-facing. Through this ongoing material exploration, I position identity as lived, adaptive, and continually reassembled rather than fixed.
